Glitches

I hack cameras to create these distorted, glitchy photographs. To be more specific, I enable

short circuits on the cameras’ circuit boards causing the arrangement of pixels to be

misplaced. More often than not I break the camera trying to do this. Failure almost always

outweighs success in this tedious and frustrating endeavor. Even when executed successfully,

the camera usually breaks down over time.

I got into photography in high school and pursued it for my undergraduate degree. Through

these experiences I have had the opportunity to shoot with a vast array of film and digital

cameras as well as other experimental processes. Out of all these gadgets and techniques,

the Holga remains my favorite photographic device. Holgas are cheap, plastic film cameras

known for their red and orange light leaks, the inspiration for some Instagram filters. However,

the rapid acquisition of digital photographs, cost effectiveness of digital shooting, and digital

editing capabilities give digital photography advantages over film that I prefer. I wanted to

create a digital camera that has in-body camera manipulations much like the Holga, but I did

not want just another filter. I wanted something that was authentic to what a digital camera is.
